Public pools and spas
Find out how Council regulates public pools and spas to maintain safe water quality and prevent health risks
Keeping our public pools and spas safe
We ensure all public pools and spas are safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Public swimming pools and spa pools include those:
- Open to the public, either free or by paid entry.
- To which the public is admitted as an entitlement of membership of a club.
- Provided at a workplace for the use of employees.
- Provided at a hotel, motel or guest house or at holiday units, or similar facility, for the use of guests.
- Provided at a school or hospital.
It does not include a pool situated at a private residential premises, unless that pool is used for commercial purposes (e.g. swimming lessons).
Regular testing
All public pools and spas are regularly tested to ensure compliance with the Public Health Act 2010 and the Public Health (Swimming Pools and Spa Pools) Regulation 2000. This includes monitoring water quality, chemical balance and filtration systems to maintain safe standards and reduce health risks for pool users.
How everyone can help
Pool operators and visitors can play a big part in keeping pools safe and healthy.
Please keep in mind:
- Don’t swim if you've had diarrhoea in the past two weeks.
- Always shower and wash thoroughly with soap before entering the pool.
- Try not to swallow pool water.
- Avoid urinating in pool/spa water.
How to register a pool with Council
All public pools and spas must be registered with us and undergo regular compliance checks. To register your pool or spa, please complete the health premises registration form via our Registration of Health Premises page.
