Water mains cleaning program
The Water Mains Cleaning Program uses modern cleaning technology to assist in delivering safe, reliable drinking water across the region
Keeping drinking water safe and reliable
Central Coast Council regularly cleans sections of the water pipe network as part of our ongoing water quality program. This work helps maintain safe, reliable drinking water for homes and businesses across the region.
In 2026, Council is carrying out a planned water mains cleaning program in selected suburbs to reduce the likelihood of discoloured water and improve overall water quality.
What is water mains cleaning?
Over time, small amounts of sediment can build up inside water pipes. Water mains cleaning removes this material to help keep water clear and maintain system performance.
Council uses a closed loop filtration method, also known as no-des cleaning. This technology cleans the inside of pipes while treating and recycling the water back into the network. It allows the work to be completed efficiently, with minimal water loss and no interruption to supply.
Why is the program carried out?
The Water Mains Cleaning Program helps to:
- reduce the risk of discoloured water
- maintain safe drinking water
- support compliance with water quality standard
- improve the long-term performance of the water network
Using modern cleaning technology also helps minimise disruption to customers and reduces the amount of water released during maintenance.
Where will work take place in 2026?
This year, around 125 kilometres of water mains will be cleaned across selected areas of the Central Coast.
Work will be carried out on weekdays between mid-April and early June 2026. Timing may change due to weather or operational requirements.
Planned locations include:
| Area | Length (km) | Expected dates |
|---|---|---|
| Pearl Beach | 7.1 | 16–20 April 2026 |
| Umina Beach/ Ettalong Beach | 23.7 | 21–30 April 2026 |
| Woy Woy/Umina Beach | 31.4 | 1–13 May 2026 |
| Summerland Point | 16.20 | 14–20 May 2026 |
| Bateau Bay | 28.6 | 21 May–1 June 2026 |
| The Entrance | 18.6 | 2 June –9 June 2026 |
| Total length | 125.60 |
What to expect during cleaning
Water supply will not be interrupted during this work. Some customers may notice:
- temporarily discoloured water
- a short-term drop in water pressure
- a mild chlorine smell or taste
If water appears discoloured, run the front garden tap into a bucket for about 30 seconds to check if it clears. If needed, wait one hour and repeat. Once clear, run the back garden tap briefly as well. This water can be reused on gardens.
If discolouration continues, contact Council for assistance by calling (02) 4306 7900.
